It is a pressing reality that prisons in England and Wales are grappling with severe overcrowding, a situation that is causing a multitude of challenges for prison staff. Urgent and decisive action is imperative to tackle this issue head-on.

An obvious solution is to transfer foreign prisoners to their home countries to serve their sentences, which would open up a significant amount of space, considering that many inmates are from other countries.

Regrettably, the Labour Party is not in favour of practical solutions. Instead, it is considering the early release of around 2,000 prisoners, a significant number of whom are violent offenders. Numerous campaigners have warned that such a move could pose a severe threat to victims of abuse. Women’s Aid has cautioned that abusers ‘will continue to pose a long-term threat to survivors‘ and stressed the need for ‘rigorous supervision upon their release.’

Some 2,000 criminals, including violent offenders, are to be released early in September under the SDS40 scheme, a government initiative aimed at alleviating prison overcrowding. However, this scheme has raised public safety concerns, particularly women.

Sophie Francis-Cansfield, Head of Policy at Women’s Aid, said: “The nature of domestic abuse means that it doesn’t just end when a perpetrator is caught and sent to prison. Perpetrators pose a lifelong threat to survivors, meaning that robust supervision is needed when they are released after serving their sentences.

Our frontline members tell us that women are terrified at the prospect of these men being released early and posing a genuine threat to their lives once again. We must see appropriate safeguarding in place if this scheme is to be rolled out safely.

The heinous attacks we have seen taking place over the last few weeks have made it clear that violence against women and girls is an epidemic plaguing this country. The release of dangerous perpetrators will not mitigate the abuse that women and girls experience daily.”

The Labour Party’s proposal for the early release of prisoners is not just unacceptable; it is potentially devasting for women. Yet, none of the three main parties seem willing to take a stand against it.

The British Democrats will ensure that prisoners serve their entire sentences. We will deport foreign criminals to their home countries to serve their sentences there and, if necessary, build more prisons.
