The elections held in Thuringia and Saxony on 1st September have significantly altered the political landscape in Germany and Europe. The rise of a nationalist party, AfD (Alternative for Germany), has sparked widespread debate, a reflection of the profound impact of these events.

The clear winner of the recent elections was the anti-immigration AfD party. They received 33.5% of the votes in Thuringia and came in second in Saxony with 31.5%. AfD achieved these strong results despite the establishment’s smear campaign aimed at stopping them by any means, which ultimately failed.

AfD’s success can be attributed to a diverse range of voters. Notably, they received significant support from young people concerned about the future, immigration, and their prospects for employment and housing. This demographic, along with disillusioned working-class voters, played a crucial role in AfD’s victory.

Members of AfD communicated their message by creating and sharing videos on TikTok to target a younger audience. They also conducted campaigns in small towns that had yet to be reached, and this strategy proved to be successful.

It’s no surprise that the mainstream media were disturbed by these results. Some raised concerns about the resurgence of Nazism. However, the reality is that regular people in Germany are fed up with the policies of the government coalition, which have led to inflation and recession. They do not want ‘enrichment’, mass immigration, and the use of taxpayers’ money for refugees.

It’s uncertain whether AfD will govern in those states since the other parties are unwilling to collaborate with them. However, due to these results, they will have a role in appointing senior civil servants and in any efforts to alter the constitution of Thuringia and Saxony. They will exert pressure on the government coalition to take a strict stance on immigration, as any reluctance to do so will garner more support for this anti-immigration party.

The results on 1st September were a significant win for nationalists in Germany and across Europe. It sent a clear message to the ruling elites that if they don’t take action to address mass immigration, more people will support nationalist parties. Hopefully, the British Democrats will be one of the parties that will benefit from this trend.
