One of the arguments often put forward by the pro-immigration lobby is that the NHS would collapse without immigration. Of course, this is a lie because, without immigration, there wouldn’t be waiting lists and the need to hire foreign doctors and nurses.
Aside from the fact that recruiting healthcare staff from developing countries is leading to the loss of millions of lives, there’s the added concern that many doctors and nurses lack proficiency in English. This language barrier is not just a bureaucratic hurdle; it’s a direct threat to patient safety.
A few days ago, a story emerged about a Polish heart doctor who failed nine English tests and was suspended because he couldn’t understand English.
Dr Tomasz Fryzlewicz, 65, moved to the UK in 2006 from Krakow, Poland, working at various NHS hospitals as a locum (a temporary doctor who fills in for regular staff when they are on leave), as well as fulfilling non-clinical roles analysing echocardiogram data for clinical trials.
However, Fryzlewicz, the cardiologist with 39 years of qualified experience, was reported to the General Medical Council (GMC) in 2014 after repeatedly failing English language tests under the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
He has since appeared before ‘Fitness to Practise‘ medicine panels every year, repeatedly failing each exam resit. But now, after a hearing of the Medical Practitioners Service in Manchester, Dr Fryzlewicz was suspended for 12 months and offered a 10th chance to pass his exams after he failed to produce any certificates.
Regrettably, this is not an isolated incident. Many doctors struggle with English proficiency, and the government’s lack of action is exacerbating the situation. It’s a frustrating reality that leaves the British Democrats as the political party willing to address this issue.
