By British Democrats Secretary, Michael Jones
This article aims to illustrate a few examples and highlight the benefits of serving as a local government representative, whether as a councillor or candidate in local government elections or as a community campaigner.
The political elite of the Westminster Establishment is vehemently opposed to the prospect of a strong Patriotic Nationalist party, like the British Democrats, securing seats at the local government level and ultimately taking control of councils across the nation.
If it’s implemented correctly and thoughtfully, there is the potential for a Patriotic Nationalist force in the UK to grow and mirror what’s happened in France, Sweden, Hungary, Belgium, and Austria.
In France, for example, one key reason the National Rally party (Rassemblement National) has been so successful is its staying power at a local and regional level. It has maintained its structure. It’s been vital to remain embedded in their communities, and this is where Patriots in the UK can take a lesson from our friends across the Channel. National Rally (Rassemblement National) has shown how its resilience has pushed it to the top of the electoral field, topping the poll at the National Assembly and European Elections in 2024.
Furthermore, for a Patriotic Nationalist party (such as the British Democrats) to gain popular support on a national level, it is crucial to demonstrate to voters how effectively we can represent them at a local level initially.
Annual budgets
Local councils, whether County, Borough, District, Town or Parish, have large annual budgets. By being elected onto one of these local government councils, you have a direct input on how that money is spent.
In Maldon, Essex, a group of men and women with patriotic ideals held the majority of seats on Heybridge Parish Council and controlled the £200,000 annual budget. They were at the centre of the community, with Richard Perry as the architect and driving force behind this group, serving as the Chairman of the Council. Here are some examples of the community events and important work that Richard and his group of volunteer councillors organised with the resources available to them:
St George’s Day celebrations ✅
Installing a Green Gym ✅
Installing dog bins to help keep the area clean ✅
Knife awareness courses ✅
Youth clubs and Youth engagement with the village officer ✅
Treasure Hunt for the kids with clues and prizes ✅
Dog Show ✅
Circuses for the children ✅
Parish walks – Beating the Bounds (walking the length and breadth of the Parish, which is good exercise and doubles up as a social event) ✅
VE Day celebrations ✅
Coronation celebrations ✅
Outdoor Cinema night—which was very successful ✅
Cooking for the elderly residents every week and organising Christmas dinners at the Parish Hall ✅
Food Bank was also delivered to vulnerable residents ✅
Winter Warm initiative, in which hot water bottles, scarves, and cup-a-soups were given to vulnerable residents ✅
Skip hired for a resident whose house had caught fire ✅
Talent competition ✅
Regular quiz night ✅
Sponsoring the Brownies to help get them going ✅
Annually helping a local charity with a financial contribution ✅
1950s music nights ✅
Litter picks ✅
Organising events for Remembrance Day, the Queen’s funeral and the King’s Coronation ✅

Organising these initiatives while promoting patriotism is a perfect way of reversing the leftist indoctrination that has permeated through our society and has had an awful effect on young people in recent years. Now that’s worth doing!
Richard’s community-based political work not only promoted patriotism but also led to election victories at a higher level on the Maldon District Council in addition to Parish Council. His team members won outright majorities in first-past-the-post election battles on both councils. The fantastic work within the community likely contributed to winning elections at the District Council level. Serving as a Parish Councillor is an ideal learning curve for the next step up to Town, District, Borough, or County Council.
Being a councillor at any local government level is the best way of gaining first-hand experience and knowledge of how things work within the council and how to get things done.
Borough Councils have substantial budgets of around £177 million. Just imagine the potential impact of having Patriotic Nationalists in charge of a local authority at that level!
Promoting British Culture and Tradition
As a hard-working and proactive councillor or community campaigner, you can earn respect within your town, village, or district. This respect can provide a platform to effectively and positively promote British culture and traditions. You don’t even have to be elected as a councillor to become a helpful volunteer within your local town, village, or parish!
British Democrat Councillors leading the way
In Noak Bridge, Basildon, Essex, our dedicated British Democrat councillor, Christopher Bateman, originally elected for our party with a huge 74% of the vote, has been steadfastly serving his constituents. Christopher has been diligently addressing numerous concerns in Noak Bridge, actively contributing to enhancing his local community in many ways. Councillor Bateman took proactive measures to have an abandoned caravan and a discarded bicycle removed, meticulously trimmed overgrown hedges, and cleared slippery and hazardous leaves from pavements outside a local school. These measures exemplify grassroots political engagement at its most commendable.
As you can see from the images below, the British Democrats take part in community action, getting things done on behalf of local residents. Whether it’s cleaning off hideous graffiti, sweeping pathways outside schools ensuring safety for children and parents, or doing litter picks, our community campaigners known as British Democrats Helping Hand Teams, are always happy to help.

Protection of our Green Spaces
If the future of our people is to be as self-sufficient as possible, we must protect and conserve our green agricultural land. This responsibility lies within the jurisdiction of local councils and is a key policy advocated by the British Democrats.
British Democrat member, Councillor John Robinson, has campaigned tirelessly against the local Conservatives to save green belt land on behalf of his constituents in West Sussex.
Our March Through the Institutions
The ‘Long March Through The Institutions‘ concept refers to a strategy by the Marxist Left to gain influence and control within various public services. This strategy is becoming evident as we witness the increasing presence of leftist ideology within numerous public institutions across the country.
As the saying goes, “Two can play that game.” By actively participating in local government politics and becoming a respected community leader as a councillor or volunteer, Patriots can have a direct positive impact on people’s lives. Additionally, we can promote a Patriotic Nationalist message and help protect our statues, glorious history, and cultural heritage.
Volunteering
A few years ago, community campaigners now members of the British Democrats, began organising regular food banks in town centres. They ran a regular door-to-door food bank service in one location on the South East London/Kent border. These initiatives were very successful and popular, connecting local people positively. The static town centre food bank also served as an information stall where leaflets where handed out in addition to food parcels. The door-to-door service involved residents contributing items such as tins of soup or cans of baked beans, which were then distributed to families in need.
This approach provided tangible support to struggling families. It served as a unifying force, bringing together different community members, with the organisers acting as facilitators.
Forcing Action to be taken
Having dedicated and patriotic individuals serving as councillors on a local authority can act as a check on the decisions made by the council, especially if you can be part of a committee within the council. For instance, it may have a positive impact on housing local people first. It may prompt inquiries into scandals such as grooming gangs. Consider the impact if there had been a substantial presence of patriotic nationalist councillors on Rotherham Council two decades ago. Perhaps the situation could have been different for the young girls who were abused, drugged, and raped.
Winning the hearts and minds of the British people
Patriotic political representation offers hope, optimism, and a promise of salvation for the nation. Being an elected Nationalist representative provides ample opportunities to demonstrate the benefits of having a nationalist to vote for. These benefits include serving as a local representative, establishing strong local support, and engaging in community-based politics, which can yield significant benefits at both the local and national levels.
The need for patriotic political representation is clear. Without it, the British people would become more demoralised, more crushed, and more susceptible to overall degeneration, and ultimately, our country and people would suffer.
Community politics can go beyond serving as a councillor; there are numerous other opportunities to contribute within the community as a volunteer, as Richard Perry and his team demonstrated on the long list in this article. There are also other things to get involved with locally, for example, serving on the local Royal British Legion committee, becoming a school governor, or volunteering as a community campaigner who organises petitions to preserve our green spaces are all valuable and worthwhile initiatives that can make a significant impact. Everyone can do something to sink deep roots into your community.

Well said Mike. In order to challenge for parliamentary seats, securing foundations at community level are a must, and this can’t be overstated enough. Councillors can make a big difference to the well-being and standard of living for local people, and will earn a lot of respect when members of the public know they are making a genuine effort to address their concerns. British Democrat councillors, both elected and unelected, have listened to the people, and are getting things done!
