On Remembrance Sunday, officers from Essex Police visited journalist Allison Pearson of the Telegraph to inform her that she was under investigation regarding a 2023 post she made on X (formerly Twitter), owned by Elon Musk. However, the officers did not reveal who lodged the complaint or which specific post was being investigated, raising serious concerns about the transparency of the investigation.

Musk, a close ally of Donald Trump and the world’s richest man, has advocated for free speech in Britain and supported the journalist. He posted on X, stating, “This needs to stop.”

Essex Police has revealed that it has established a ‘gold group,’ typically reserved for dealing with major incidents such as terror attacks, to manage its controversial investigation into journalist Allison Pearson.

Pearson reported that officers informed her they were investigating a ‘non-crime hate incident‘ under Section 17 of the Public Order Act 1986. This statement from the police is quite unusual and raises the question: why are they focusing on investigating non-crimes when actual crimes require attention?

The police are now becoming more recognised for policing tweets than for policing the streets!

The Allison Pearson investigation is an attack on freedom of speech. It goes against the principles of natural justice for the police to question someone without revealing the identity of her accuser or specifying what she allegedly wrote that was considered so offensive.

It is clear that the government has directed the police to suppress any criticism of immigration or asylum-seeking. We are witnessing a form of thought control from a totalitarian regime. This scenario evokes a future dystopian society similar to what is depicted in George Orwell’s novel ‘1984.’

Essex Police would do well to read the Crown Prosecution Service website, which states:

“In deciding upon the public interest of charging these offences, it is essential that prosecutors keep in mind that in a free, democratic, and tolerant society, people are able to robustly exchange views, even when these may cause offence.”

Free speech, a fundamental right that is currently at risk in Britain, is a topic that should engage and concern us all.
