Post-election, the Labour government made a firm commitment to stop the practice of housing asylum seekers in hotels, a move supposedly aimed at saving taxpayers’ money. However, this promise was regrettably and predictably reneged upon.

Asylum seekers are now set to be housed in hotels for an additional four years, a decision that will impose a significant financial strain on the government and, by extension, the taxpayers. A report by the National Audit Office reveals that the UK’s expenditure on hotel accommodations in the financial year 2023-24 amounted to a staggering £3 billion.

Hotel usage peaked at 400 under the previous government in the autumn of 2023, when 56,000 asylum seekers were housed in such facilities. The number decreased to 213 in July of last year but then rose to 220 in October 2024. Spending on accommodation and support for asylum seekers has surged from £739 million in 2019-20 to an unimaginable £4.7 billion in 2023-24.

This figure does not even include costs associated with access to housing, the welfare system, NHS healthcare, and additional services, highlighting the urgent need for a solution.

This situation not only makes a mockery of the government’s pledge to stop the practice of housing asylum seekers in hotels but also serves as a stark reminder of their misplaced priorities. It’s widely recognised that government ministers cannot be trusted because they prefer to spend money on people who shouldn’t be in the UK in the first place instead of helping native Britons who are facing hardship.

None of the parties at Westminster will do anything to stop the flood of asylum seekers, leaving the British Democrats as the only credible party with the backbone and policies to resist the entire immigration scam.
