For many years grooming gangs raped underage British girls with the complicity of authorities who did nothing to avoid accusations of racism. Recently, changes have begun after many nationalists campaigned to uncover those atrocious crimes.
It has now been revealed that members of the gang received £611,204 in legal aid, which adds insult to injury.
Details of the funding for the Rotherham cases come days after Labour reneged on its abuse inquiry promises to appease Pakistani voters.
In 2018, seven men were sentenced to a total of 101 years in prison for grooming and abusing five girls in the South Yorkshire town between 1998 and 2005. Mohammed Imran Ali Akhtar, 43, the ringleader, was sentenced to 23 years in prison and received £143,696 in legal aid.
His total does not include costs for a separate trial last year in which he received a 12-year sentence for raping a girl of 13 after plying her with alcohol and drugs.
Five other defendants, aged between 40 and 45 and sentenced to ten to twenty years in prison, received legal aid ranging from £60,147 to £99,168 each.
The seventh gang member, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had £90,849 in legal aid. All but one of the gang members were convicted of rape. Notably, one of them fell asleep in court while the victims’ impact statements were being read.
This situation is clearly unacceptable, but unfortunately, none of the three main parties will take action to seriously tackle the issue, leaving the British Democrats as the only political party with the resolve to deal with the whole rape and grooming scandal.
