The British Democrats will endeavour to make the United Kingdom as self-sufficient as is practically possible. Therefore, we welcome the following initiative.
Every year Britain imports a huge amount of food and not only does this make our current account deficit worse but it also exposes British consumers to swings in food prices that authorities are powerless to control.
So achieving self-sufficiency in the production of food is very important. Even if British weather makes it impossible to grow many crops it’s important to try and create a new hybrid that can minimise our imports. A recent story demonstrates this goal can be achieved if more money is invested in research.
More than two million tins of baked beans are eaten every day, with all the beans grown in the US, Canada, Ethiopia and China. In that regard, it’s worth noting that the first-ever commercial crop of British-grown baked beans has been canned in a Lincolnshire factory.
Specially bred haricot beans designed to grow in the UK climate were harvested in September at a farm in the county. It is hoped that the baked bean breakthrough will reduce the reliance on imports.
The project was developed by scientists at the University of Warwick, who took twelve years to produce the seeds.
A smaller-scale trial to grow them in 2022 failed due to the summer heatwave.
Some health food brands have attempted to market British-grown fava beans as ‘baked beans’, but they have lacked mass appeal due to the difference in taste to haricots.
Even if the production of baked beans in the UK is not enough to stop imports from other countries, this innovation proves that with a little effort, more crops can be designed to be cultivated in the UK. With the right policies, the goal of achieving food self-sufficiency is not an impossible dream but a concrete reality.
