The UK granted refugee status to four Rwandans who were at risk from the regime despite claiming that Rwanda is a safe country for asylum seekers. An investigation by The Observer and the Led by Donkeys campaign group revealed this information for the first time.

The UK government wants to send asylum seekers who enter the country through small boats to Rwanda, but documents have raised questions about the African state’s safety. The proposed Rwanda bill aims to prevent legal challenges against this decision.

Migrants were brought into Dungeness, Kent and may be sent to Rwanda. An intelligence agency compiled a dossier accusing Rwanda of a smear campaign against critics in the UK. A Rwandan was granted asylum by the Home Office the day after the government told the Supreme Court the country was safe!

The refugee supported an opposition party led by Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza and allegedly witnessed atrocities committed by President Paul Kagame’s forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

A refugee and his wife were granted asylum in Britain after the Home Office recognised that they had a well-founded fear of persecution under the UN 1951 Refugee Convention. However, the refugee still fears for his safety and believes that the UK should not pretend that Rwanda is a safe place for refugees.

A Rwandan refugee sought asylum in the UK due to fear of being targeted by the regime over a family member’s suspected links to the opposition. The Home Office accepted his claim of a “well-founded fear of persecution”. The refugee believes that refugees who keep their heads down and avoid criticising the government are safe in Rwanda.

He said, “In Rwanda, even the suspicion of being sympathetic to the opposition can be dangerous. People have died or been imprisoned for much less.”

The Home Office granted asylum to four asylum seekers without going to a tribunal. One of them was a woman from an African state who claimed she was being forced to work for the Rwandan intelligence. She was granted asylum on 24 November.

Lawyers have said that Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda Plan has a 50% chance of succeeding. It may work, or it may not. We now have a ludicrous situation where Sunak declares Rwanda to be safe, but the courts are granting asylum to people from Rwanda who allege that Rwanda is not safe.

The government must repeal all legislation preventing this country from gaining control of its borders. Repealing our adherence to the UN 1951 Refugee Convention is an urgent priority. However, Rishi Sunak needs a backbone to do it. He has repeatedly said, “We must make sure we meet our international obligations.” What about the government’s obligations to the people of this country?
