The Party of British Identity
One of the most famous depictions of Britannia was by Frances Stewart, the Duchess of Richmond and Lennox. Frances was described by the diarist Samuel Pepys as “The greatest beauty he ever saw”.
Frances appeared on a coin to celebrate the end of the Anglo-Dutch war with the Peace of Breda in 1667. The coin was issued in 1672. Charles 11 wanted Frances to become his mistress but she always refused.
Frances died in 1702 at the age of 55.
