On Thursday, May 8th, British Democrat candidate Lawrence Rustem won a council by-election in Kent. The election filled the final vacancy on Downswood Parish Council in the borough of Maidstone. Two candidates submitted nomination forms to compete, resulting in a two-horse race.

Lawrence, pictured above second from the right, faced Independent candidate Karen Berry. Independent candidates have gained significant popularity recently, often polling well or winning council seats. We understood that winning would not be an easy task.

This by-election overlapped the County Council elections, which occurred just seven days earlier. As a result, our campaign team in Kent faced an increased workload on top of their already busy schedule. However, our election team is experienced and knowledgeable, and they know exactly where to focus their efforts!

The typical inaccurate and unsubstantiated attacks from individuals using anonymous usernames surfaced on social media targeting Lawrence. However, these smear campaigns often backfire when people meet our candidates in person. Engaging in face-to-face canvassing is the best way to connect with local residents, and this is where the British Democrats excel and thrive. When people meet us at their doors, they quickly realise that we are sensible, polite, decent, and ordinary individuals just like them. As a result, the lies and smears tend to fade away.

Councillor Rustem said, “I would like to thank the voters in Downswood for putting their faith and trust in me to represent them. Whether you voted for me or not, I will work very hard to help you all in any way I can. I would also like to thank our wonderful team for helping with the election campaign.”

We wish Lawrence the best of luck in his new role, and we are confident he will be a very good councillor.

Result:

Lawrence Rustem, British Democrats – 143 votes. 54.5%

Karen Berry, Independent – 119 votes.

Turnout: 16%
