By Dr Jim Lewthwaite
The decision to cancel four mayoral elections, all in the affluent, ex-Tory-inclined, now Reform-favouring South East and East Anglia, highlights how desperate the Labour government and their fellow-travellers in the deep state have become to avoid the judgement of the British public on their abysmal performance so far.
The reorganisation of district and county councils into unitary authorities is the alleged cause of the two-year delay. This delay is seen as ridiculous, and the reorganisation itself is considered unnecessary and undesirable. This change will not devolve power; instead, power will be elevated to distant, more urbanised areas. These areas are believed to be more susceptible to establishment or “deep state” control.
In some areas, the electorate will have been unable to push-back against authoritarian albeit incompetent leftism for three years. Taken in the context of the subversion of common law – the 800-year-old recourse to the judgement of one’s peers rather than a state-appointed judge sitting alone, the direction of travel is obvious. An Orwellian future looms.
