Keir Starmer and his ministers keep preaching about Britons accepting hardship to balance the books, but it’s a different story when it comes to them. It’s now come to light that they’ve enjoyed over £800,000 in freebies and gifts this year, a stark contrast to the austerity they advocate for the public.
Since the start of 2024, David Lammy, the Foreign Secretary, has been the top beneficiary, having accepted over £150,000 worth. These freebies included £2,500 worth of lavish hospitality football tickets to watch Tottenham Hotspur at their White Hart Lane stadium. It’s a clear case of personal gain at the expense of political integrity.
The largest sum donated to him was from a Starmerite think-tank called Labour Together, which donated £40,440 for the “provision of research and writing services“.
According to the Register of Members’ Interests, Labour Cabinet ministers have accepted £753,017 in donations and £90,853 in gifts since the beginning of the year.
Wes Streeting, the Secretary of State for Health & Social Care, received £117,000 in donations and gifts, which included four tickets and hospitality (worth £1,160) to see Taylor Swift at Wembley Stadium. This places him second on the Labour Party Freebie List league table.
The largest donation to The Health Secretary was valued at £48,000 in four instalments from OPD Group Ltd, a company controlled by Peter Hearn, a recruitment mogul and one of Labour’s biggest donors.
While Labour was in opposition, Wes Streeting accepted £13,000 “towards staffing costs” from Kevin Craig, a businessman who later became the Labour Party parliamentary candidate for the Central Suffolk and North Ipswich constituency.
However, Mr Craig was later forced to stand down after it emerged he had placed a bet on his constituency outcome in the general election, betting that the Tories would win. Mr Streeting returned his donation from Mr Craig.
Among Angela Rayner’s £104,000 in gifts and donations since the start of the year was £2,230 for clothing from ME+EM, a British luxury fashion brand.
Keir Starmer stated that he accepted £20,000 in donations for accommodation because his son “needed a place to study for his GCSEs” while journalists besieged his family home during the general election campaign. The question arises as to why Starmer didn’t use his own money to pay for this.
The freebie scandal which has engulfed the Labour Party is just the tip of the iceberg, as more government ministers have received gifts and freebies. These donations and freebies raise serious questions about the independence of the Labour Party’s policies and decisions. The question is, what do the donors want in exchange for such generosity? They only give after expecting something in return. It’s not unreasonable to now say that the Labour Party is firmly in the pockets of lobbyists.
This stinks and the only solution is for people to support the British Democrats, led by Dr Jim Lewthwaite. We have a clear stance on political ethics, advocating for a change to reduce corruption.
