Every month, households across Britain feel the bite of rising energy costs, yet too little of that money strengthens this country or secures its future. Instead, Britain remains exposed to imported energy, foreign capital, and a policy class that seems content to let others profit from our dependency.
Norway chose a different path. Its petroleum revenues are channelled into the Government Pension Fund Global, a sovereign wealth fund created to invest the proceeds of oil and gas for the long term, rather than allowing them to be wasted or overheated into the domestic economy. The fund is now worth around $2 trillion, and the Norwegian government generally limits annual spending from it to the expected real return, commonly around 3 percent, so the nation preserves wealth for the future instead of burning through it in the present.
That is the lesson Britain should take seriously. If a nation is blessed with energy resources, those resources should serve the national interest, not merely feed multinational profits while families struggle with bills and industry pays through the nose. Norway understands that national wealth must be governed with discipline, patience, and pride, not left to the whim of global markets.
Britain should adopt the same principle of self-restraint and national purpose. Our own energy system should be built to lower costs, secure supply, and create enduring British wealth, not deepen our dependence on imports and financial churn. That means putting British interests first, reclaiming control over our energy future, and ensuring that the benefits of energy production are retained for the people who live and work here.
The British Democrats believe in a country that stands on its own feet. We believe in national self-respect, economic nationalism, and policies that reward our people rather than outsiders. A serious nation would not allow energy to become a tax on domestic life while others build permanent funds from their natural advantage. Britain should stop paying for its own decline and start investing in its own future.
