The Labour government’s recent policies have placed unprecedented strain on British farmers, threatening the very foundation of our agricultural industry. The British Democrats are committed to standing with our farmers and advocating for policies that support and sustain British agriculture.
Red Diesel Regulations: A Misguided Approach
In April 2022, the government restricted the use of red diesel—a fuel taxed at a lower rate for specific industries—to encourage the use of more environmentally friendly alternatives. While agriculture was largely exempted, the changes have led to confusion and increased operational challenges for many farmers. The complexity of the new regulations has left some farmers uncertain about compliance, potentially increasing operational costs and administrative burdens.
Inheritance Tax Reforms: Undermining Generational Farming
The Labour government’s proposal to apply inheritance tax to agricultural land threatens the continuity of family-run farms. Traditionally, agricultural land has been exempt from such taxes to ensure that farms can be passed down through generations without incurring prohibitive costs. Removing this exemption could force families to sell portions of their land to meet tax liabilities, undermining the viability of their farming operations.
Land Seizure Policies: Eroding Property Rights
Labour’s recent policy proposals include granting local councils the authority to purchase farmland at lower values for development purposes, such as housing projects. This approach not only devalues the hard work of farmers but also sets a dangerous precedent for property rights in the UK. Such measures could lead to a loss of agricultural land, further threatening the nation’s food security.
The British Democrats’ Commitment to Farmers
The British Democrats recognize the invaluable contribution of British farmers to our economy, culture, and national identity. We propose the following measures to support and protect our agricultural sector:
- Preserve Red Diesel Entitlements: Ensure that farmers can continue to use red diesel without additional regulatory burdens, recognizing its role in maintaining farm viability.
- Protect Inheritance Tax Exemptions: Maintain the current inheritance tax exemptions for agricultural land to support the continuity of family farms and rural communities.
- Defend Property Rights: Oppose any policies that allow for the compulsory purchase of farmland at reduced values, safeguarding farmers’ rights and the future of British agriculture.
- Engage with Farming Communities: Establish open channels of communication with farmers to ensure that their voices are heard in policy-making processes.
The British Democrats stand firm in our support for British farmers. We believe that a thriving agricultural sector is essential for a strong and self-sufficient nation. Join us in advocating for policies that protect our farmers and preserve the agricultural heritage of the United Kingdom.
