A fresh debate has erupted across social media over whether “Englishness” is a distinct white indigenous ethnicity or merely a loose national identity that anyone can select on a form. Technocrats, academics, and establishment commentators routinely reduce English identity to a administrative tick-box on the census or a temporary collection of historical migration layers.

This attempt to erase the English as an actual ethnic group is a targeted political manoeuvre. No one applies this standard to other nations. No one claims the Japanese, native tribes, or the Kurds are fictitious identities simply because people can move to their territories or pick up a passport. Yet when it comes to the native people of England, the establishment insists our heritage is just a state of mind.

The Politics of Identity Erasure

The effort to dilute English identity is not new. Political elites have weaponised language for decades to undermine the concept of an indigenous population.

During the October 2009 BBC Question Time debate, senior Labour politician Jack Straw openly dismissed the idea of a distinct native population, claiming on air that he hardly knew anyone who was ‘true British’ because everyone had ‘different racial elements’ in their make-up. Years earlier in a BBC interview, Straw generated widespread criticism when he described the English as ‘potentially very aggressive, very violent’ while downplaying English national identity.

This rhetoric is matched by political slurs designed to normalise demographic change. In 2001, Conservative MP John Townend sparked a national scandal when he warned that mass immigration was turning the nation into a ‘mongrel race.’ Rather than defending the native population, political figures later attempted to reclaim the term. Home Secretary David Blunkett embraced the phrase to defend multiculturalism, famously describing Britain as a ‘mongrel nation’ to justify ongoing population shifts.

By defining the nation as a “mongrel” construct without borders or ancestral roots, politicians give themselves permission to replace native interests with global economic management.

Heritage, History, and Belonging

An ethnic group is defined by shared ancestry, native culture, historical continuity, and a collective connection to a specific homeland. The people’s of Briton built the institutions, towns, culture, and common law that defined this island for well over a millennium.

Reducing Englishness to a simple “self-chosen sense of belonging” strips indigenous people of their fundamental right to self-determination and recognition. A state passport or a census entry denotes legal status; it does not replace generations of lineage, heritage, and shared history.

The British Democrats stand against the deliberate erasure of English identity. Our party demands formal recognition of the English as an indigenous nation, possessing an undeniable right to preserve their distinct heritage, culture, and homeland against globalist dilution.

Protecting this legacy requires total border control and comprehensive remigration policies to end mass population replacement, safeguard social cohesion, and relieve pressure on local resources. True security goes hand in hand with economic independence, which means rebuilding domestic manufacturing, local agriculture, and regional infrastructure to serve native families rather than multinational corporations.

Power must be restored to our actual towns and villages. By giving local parishes and communities binding veto power over housing developments, council decisions, and regional planning, we can ensure our people retain direct control over the future of their own neighbourhoods.

Englishness is not a social experiment, a tick-box on a civil service questionnaire, or a “mongrel” corporate project. It is an enduring ethnic identity rooted in the soil, history, and people of this country.
