Recently, a notable political event took place in France, but most media outlets ignored it.
The National Assembly of France accepted a proposal from Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (Rassemblement National), marking a surprising turn of events. It’s the first time Le Pen’s Party, also led by Jordan Bardella, has won a legislative vote, a development that many did not anticipate.
In a significant session and despite fierce opposition from far-left lawmakers, the proposal was approved by the narrowest margin of 185 to 184 votes. The non-binding resolution urges the government to repeal a 1968 agreement with Algiers. This agreement, which established a ‘special arrangement’ that grants Algerians preferential rights in immigration, employment, social housing, and benefits, has been a point of contention in French politics for decades.
Although the text does not carry legal weight, the vote represents a significant symbolic victory for Marine Le Pen’s Party. Lawmakers have previously isolated her Party due to the so-called cordon sanitaire. This unwritten rule discourages collaboration with nationalist groups.
“For the first time, a text proposed by the National Rally has been adopted,” Le Pen stated shortly after the vote, as she urged Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu to act on the resolution.
The National Rally achieved this unprecedented victory by choosing a battle that garnered support beyond the Party’s ranks.
It’s a significant achievement because it demonstrates that the National Rally is now more powerful than ever. Such an outcome will resonate well beyond France, serving as a clear example of the growing relevance of nationalist parties throughout Europe.
