The Government claims it must raise taxes to repair the public finances, yet continues to spend billions of pounds each year on asylum seekers.
It recently emerged that councils are spending what has been described as a “catastrophic” amount of taxpayer money on social care for asylum seekers, with costs reaching £744 million in 2024/25.
The figure represents a sharp rise from the £299 million spent in 2019/20 and includes funding for interpreters, housing, education, and healthcare, according to a report by the TaxPayers’ Alliance. The think tank found that households in the City of London faced the highest per-capita costs last year, at around £400 per household, with Islington close behind at approximately £133.
Spending on social care for asylum seekers has risen by 165 per cent since 2019/20, increasing from £50.6 million to £133.9 million.
Anna Strickland, a researcher at the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said:
“The escalating costs of providing social care for asylum seekers represent yet another ticking time bomb in town hall budgets, with local residents suffering the consequences.
“Taxpayers have watched with dismay as successive governments have failed to get a grip on this issue, knowing they will inevitably end up picking up the tab.
“With councils essentially helpless in the face of this ongoing crisis, it is imperative that Whitehall urgently finds a way to stop the migrant crisis.”
A total of 41,472 migrants arrived in the UK after crossing the English Channel in 2025, the second-highest annual figure on record.
More than 109,000 asylum claims were also lodged last year, with around £4 billion spent on asylum support, including £2.7 billion on accommodation.
Is it any wonder council taxes are soaring while essential local services are being cut? This is unacceptable, and it is the British Democrats who will restore fiscal responsibility and prioritise local needs.
