When Marine Le Pen’s party backed a no-confidence vote aimed at ousting Michel Barnier and his government, many in the mainstream media accused the leader of the National Rally of being selfish, especially given the urgent and severe financial crisis that France was facing.

French public debt, currently at 110% of GDP, is excessively high, and government spending has become unsustainable. Marine Le Pen has acknowledged this issue and has proposed some practical and feasible policies to address it. One of her key proposals is to reduce the amount of money France contributes to the EU annually.

France’s contribution to the European Union exceeds what it receives by £20 billion, a significant imbalance that leaves room for substantial budget cuts. It’s a well-known fact that a considerable portion of this funding is wasted, a situation that Marine Le Pen aims to rectify.

Her second proposal was to decrease spending on foreign aid. Finally, she urged the government to cease providing healthcare assistance to undocumented immigrants.

The proposals being discussed are grounded in common sense. They are preferable to cutting pensions, reducing medicine reimbursements, or increasing taxes—policies that Barnier has been advocating and that the National Rally rightly finds unacceptable.

Currently, it is uncertain who will become France’s next prime minister. The key factor will be whether they can secure enough support to fulfil their responsibilities. However, one thing is clear: Marine Le Pen has never been in a stronger position. President Macron’s refusal to rule out allowing her party to participate in any future government will only bolster the National Rally. This situation increases the likelihood that a member of the National Rally could become the next president of France.
