Portugal has officially joined a growing list of European nations by enacting a comprehensive ban on full-face veils in public spaces.

The new legislation, which prohibits garments that conceal identity in public, follows similar measures already introduced across Europe in nations such as France, Belgium, Denmark, and Switzerland. In signing the measure into law, the Portuguese presidency noted that the face remains a central element of human identity and social communication.

The enactment of this law in Portugal highlights a stark contrast in national priorities across the continent, placing social cohesion and public security, above open-ended liberal multiculturalism.

Public Security and Social Cohesion

For years, establishment politicians in the UK have dismissed calls to restrict face-covering garments, citing liberal legal frameworks and human rights arguments. Yet our European neighbours are proving that where the political will exists, sovereign states can act decisively.

A open, democratic society relies upon mutual trust, visible interaction, and basic security standards. Being able to see who you are communicating with in public life is not a trivial preference; it is a cornerstone of European social life and public safety.

Allowing full-face concealment in banks, courts, public transport, and high streets undermines public security and creates a parallel society where basic national norms of communication are discarded.

The Failure of Westminster

While nations like Portugal take practical steps to defend their national identity and social cohesion, the political establishment in Westminster continues to drag its feet. Both Labour and the Conservatives have consistently shied away from addressing the erosion of British cultural norms, preferring to indulge divisive multicultural policies that fracture communities.

When European nations prioritise national security, British politicians offer only excuses. The refusal to address full-face veils in public spaces is symbolic of a wider failure to uphold British values, and enforce a single standard of law for everyone.

The British Democrats Position

The British Democrats stand for a strong, unified nation where British laws, customs, and security come first:

  1. Equal Application of the Law: Public security demands that everyone in public spaces can be clearly identified. No group or belief system should receive special exemptions from basic security and identification standards.
  2. Defending Our Cultural Heritage: Open social communication is central to the British way of life. We oppose the expansion of practices that isolate individuals and promote parallel societies.
  3. Putting British Cohesion First: We advocate for straightforward, commonsense legislation to restrict full-face veils in public spaces, ensuring the UK implements measures that safeguard national identity and security.

Portugal has shown that protecting national norms is a matter of political willpower. It is high time we followed suit.
