Basildon council in Essex will receive a government grant of £2.4million to fund the building of 17 brand new homes exclusively for migrants from Ukraine and Afghanistan even though Tory council leader Andrew Baggott promised in 2021 that refugees would not be able to apply for council homes.
Basildon and neighbouring Essex boroughs have huge problems with homeless people and families on housing waiting lists long term. Among those homeless are veterans and many young people.
Recently nearby Southend council also received funding to provide a minimum of 12 homes for Ukrainian households living here, and in addition almost £500,000 in funding to provide a minimum of two larger four-bedroom homes for Afghanistan households.
The council is also eligible for a grant of £500 million capital fund to ensure Afghan and Ukraine migrants are provided with suitable long-term accommodation the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities has confirmed.
Basildon and other Essex boroughs has, in recent years, seen a large influx of people from outside move into the town many of whom are from ethnic minority communities.
Previously, anyone wishing to relocate to Essex were told that they would need to be resident in the county for at least seven years before even being considered. A rule that apparently is still active!
Many other towns across the country will soon have to comply with these rules. Providing homes for refugees is a requirement of the UN 1951 Refugee Convention.
The British Democrats will put local people first for housing every time, and are committed to withdrawing the United Kingdom from:
(1) The UN 1951 Refugee Convention.
(2) The European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
(3) The Global Compact for Migration.
